New York’s first Italian sale to look beyond Arte Povera
2015.01.14. | Auction news Forward email | Print
Curator Francesco Bonami is organising a Phillips auction in April

The Italian curator Francesco Bonami is organising an auction of Italian art at Phillips New York on 28 April. Around 50 works created over the past 100 years are due to go under the hammer, but Arte Povera, one of the best-known movements to come out of the country in the past century, will not take centre stage. Instead, Bonami will focus on less well-known artists, in a similar vein to the exhibition he organised at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice in 2008, “Italics”, which shifted the focus from Arte Povera and Transavanguardia artists to those who had been side-lined by traditional readings of Modern and contemporary Italian art. “The idea is to open up the view of Italian art beyond the household names,” Bonami says.

The Phillips sale, billed as the first major Italian auction in New York, will feature works by artists including Paola Pivi, Roberto Cuoghi and Maurizio Cattelan—who is perhaps the biggest name on the block. It comes at a time of heightened growth in the Italian art market; in London last October, the previous record for an Italian art sale was beaten twice, when Christie’s made £27.6m and then Sotheby’s achieved £41.4m the following night. Records were set at Sotheby’s for artists including Piero Manzoni (£12.6m) and Enrico Castellani (£3.8m).

Bonami says interest for Italian art is also growing in the US. “I always felt that the richness and depth of Modern and contemporary Italian art has been overlooked and undervalued,” he says. “There are a few names demanding high prices but there is much more to discover. If you are not following the beaten path you can still get masterpieces at a great value. New York is then the perfect platform.”

The curator, who organised a part-selling show of contemporary sculpture at Phillips London last October, says he is approaching the sale as he would his other shows and is looking for specific works to develop his concept. “The difference is that in this case the show will be for sale in a public auction,” he says.
